Despite these challenges, climate change remains a sidelined issue, lacking the necessary urgency and coordinated national response.
Preserving Pakistan's Glaciers
Pakistan boasts more glacial ice than any nation outside the polar regions, with the Baltoro Glacier in the Central Karakoram National Park being particularly significant. These glaciers are vital for sustaining the country's river systems and water supply. However, increased tourism has led to environmental degradation in these areas. In a single season, approximately 33,000 kilograms of waste were left behind in the Baltoro and K2 Base Camp regions. This pollution not only accelerates glacier melting by increasing greenhouse gas emissions but also contaminates water sources relied upon by millions downstream.
Tackling the Waste Management Challenge
Waste management is another pressing environmental concern for Pakistan. The country ranks among the top 10 global methane emitters, primarily due to organic waste decomposing in landfills. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, over 80 times more impactful than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, significantly contributing to global warming. Additionally, the widespread presence of plastics and industrial waste disrupts ecosystems and water bodies, complicating pollution management efforts. The lack of effective recycling and composting systems further exacerbates waste accumulation issues.
Allied Bank's Environmental Initiatives
In response to these environmental challenges, Allied Bank has taken proactive measures by organizing a two-week clean-up trek to the K2 Base Camp. During this initiative, the team collected 1,200 kilograms of garbage, demonstrating the potential for positive change through targeted environmental action.
